I Never
thought I’d end up back here. A chance
to remember what I’d forgot, and to see the changes a decade can bring. Still, it was impossibly tough to go. I miss home, but this is an experience I'll never forget.
In mid-September my company asked about an opportunity to go
to Shanghai. I couldn't turn it down. There’s also something just
really interesting about China. Glamorous
definitely isn’t the right word.
Adventure - that fits. It took
months to figure out the details, timing, and paperwork. I’m finally here; a few days in to my 5 month
and 19 day stay.
Here are my first few impressions: overflowing with people, is that fog or smog,
that no smoking sign is just for decoration, scooters everywhere, accommodating
and generous people, where is the sun, what time is it, and as Rachel says – I’m
in the future.
It’s been a whirlwind few days. I’m excited to be at work, and only hope I can
start adding some value to the people that have been so helpful.
Let’s get a few of the basics out of the way:
The flight: As
expected, so long. Fourteen hours, plus a
one hour delay for good measure. Business class meant
pork chops, prosciutto with melon balls, ice cream sundays, huge TV screens,
and dozens of movies to pass the time.
Not a bad way to travel.
The food: Actually, I haven’t tried that much! My coworkers
took me out on the first day to a Japanese restaurant. The food was amazing, but I’m looking forward
to something more…local. There’s a big
outdoor cafeteria near work with a dozen or so restaurants for
lunch. I had Pho with beef balls, pig
neck, and the most amazing broth.
Sometimes I wish there wasn't a translation on the menu though.
The hotel: It’s
nice and new. I’ve got a washer/dryer,
fridge, 5 gallon water tank, nice bathroom, two closets, a bedroom, two tv’s
with HBO (!).
Hey, Ben, it sounds like you're off to a good start. Have fun and enjoy the adventure.
